LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 26, 2023) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer delivered her fifth State of the State address last night, her third before a joint session of the Legislature at the House Chambers in Lansing. While stressing bipartisan cooperation throughout her remarks, the Democrat from East Lansing put forward several initiatives as her second and final four-year term begins.
The Governor started with the Lowering MI Costs Plan with one of the tiers being the repealing of the retirement income tax.
The second, expanding tax credits, touting $3,000 refunds for families.
And Pre K for all.
Maintaining her initial campaign pledge from 2018 on emphasizing road repairs, public safety and gun violence prevention were also top of mind for the Governor
State Senate minority Leader Aric Nesbitt delivered the official GOP response, stressing the difference in what had been said in the past with what has been done during a message recorded prior to the Governor’s remarks.
Other reactions from both sides of the political aisle, as well as interests that align with those sides, went along party lines.
