GRAND HAVEN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 18, 2023) – The emotions and passions that naturally occur through athletic competition apparently went overboard at Grand Haven High School on Tuesday night.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Eric Westveer, deputies had to be be called around 8:15 PM to the campus off of Ferris Street after an altercation took place between members of visiting East Kentwood and the host Buccaneers during a varsity girls’ basketball contest. Game officials had ejected a player and a coach from the Falcons, and there were “reports of disorderly spectators,” Westveer said in a department statement, although he didn’t go into specifics as to what led to altercations on and off of the court.
The additional police presence, along with measures taken by school staffers, calmed the situation, and enabled the game to be completed, won by Grand Haven, 50-37. Both teams and all spectators left the gymnasium without further incident, with no injuries reported, and no arrests made.
Westveer added that the investigation into the matter continues.
