LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Jan. 1, 2023) – It was a confident Gretchen Whitmer that took the oath of office for the second time as Michigan’s governor on Sunday.
Before a large crowd in front of the state Capitol steps, the East Lansing Democrat was sworn in for a final four-year term as the state’s 49th Chief Executive.
“For the next four years, our task is clear – focus on the fundamentals, work together and get things done,” the Governor said in her inaugural speech. “Together, we can make Michigan a place where all people can envision a great future, no matter who they are, where they come from, or how much money they have in their picket. I am more confident than ever that our future is bright because of you, my fellow Michiganders.”
Also sworn in during the nearly hour-long late morning ceremony were Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II, Attorney General Dana Nessel, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, and state Supreme Court Justices Richard Bernstein, Kyra Harris Bolden and Brian Zahra. All of them were part of a Democratic Party clean sweep of gaining leadership of Michigan’s three branches of government based on the results of the November 8, 2022 General Election, with the Executive and Legislative branches decided in partisan balloting, while the Judicial branch, which is by law deemed non-partisan, is still dominated by Democrats.
The Michigan Republican Party issued no statement on Sunday in response to the inauguration ceremony. However, the new Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt (R-Lawton) sent this message via Twitter: “Congratulations to Governor Whitmer upon her second inauguration. Senate Republicans hope that this term she actually follows through on her repeated promises of bipartisanship. We can start by giving EVERY Michigander relief from record inflation.”
