WEST OLIVE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 30, 2022) – Another aspect of the clean up following last weekend’s winter storm along the Lakeshore has emerged.
On Thursday, Ottawa County Emergency Management Director Lou Hunt issued a statement asking residents to move ice, snow and debris from drains near homes and neighborhoods. “This can allow water to move away from structures and road, decreasing the chances for flooding damage,” Hunt said. “Successfully moving water through the system now can also minimize our risk of flooding during the spring thaw, so thank you in advance for the help.”
As for culverts and county drains, there is a link to where those county-owned spots. Those who do see obstructions there is asked to call the county’s Water Resource Commissioner’s office at 616-994-4530. Hunt added that, “Some drains may not be listed because they are private or municipal, but taking a moment to clear them can make a big difference for everyone.”
The National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids, in its daily “Hazardous Weather Outlook” statement issued around 4:30 AM on Friday, said that, “River ice may potentially break up with warmer temperatures and rain today. That could lead to a localized risk for ice jams to occur.”
