ALLENDALE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 19, 2022) – We are learning more about a “suspicious” fire on Saturday night that has claimed the lives of a 28-year-old Allendale woman and, apparently, her six-year-old son.
On Monday, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Detective Captain Jake Sparks announced that, after an autopsy was conducted on the body of Angelica Del Villar-Garcia, it was initially determined that she had passed away as a result of smoke inhalation, and that her death is being initially ruled as a suicide. The identity of the child was still to be positively established, but it is believed to be her son. Results of toxicology tests on the two were pending as of Monday afternoon.
The two were discovered in Del Villar-Garcia’s home in a subdivision off of Lake Michigan Drive and 48th Avenue after fire crews responded to a blaze there just after 6 PM on Saturday evening.
“Though the complete origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation, it has been determined that this was an ‘incendiary fire’ which was intentionally set,” Sparks said in a department statement. “Sheriff’s office detectives do not currently have any outstanding suspects or persons of interest at this time, though the circumstances surrounding the deaths and fire remain under investigation.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department or Ottawa County Silent Observer (877-887-4536).
