LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 19, 2022) – Laketown Township is turning to the state with two grant proposals to improve recreational and transportation opportunities for residents.
The board on Wednesday, Dec. 14, voted unanimously to apply for two Spark grants – one to add more pickleball courts and equipment to the Township Hall Park, 4338 Beeline Road, and the other to fund a multi-use path on Blue Star Highway. The application deadline for both grants is Dec. 19. The state will announce recipients the week of Jan. 30.
About the grants
The Michigan Spark Grant program supports projects that provide safe, accessible and public recreation facilities and spaces, according to the state’s website. Funds are administered through the Department of Natural Resources. The $64 million total is part of the Building Michigan Together Plan signed in March, which is part of the American Rescue Plan. Funds will be distributed in three rounds for a minimum of $100,000 for each project to a maximum of $1 million for a single project. Round one is $15 million. Round two is $25 million with recipients announced in spring 2023. Round three is $25 million with recipients announced in summer 2023.
