JAMESTOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 14, 2022) – Controversy over a public library in the southeast corner of Ottawa County continues.
Voters in Jamestown Township twice rejected millage renewal proposals at the ballot box this year that would have continued operations at the Patmos Library in their community. The no votes stem from concerns over books about LGBTQ+ issues on the library’s shelves, with officials saying that they would have closed the Riley Street facility next year as a result. However, a $100,000 private donation last month was aimed at preventing such a closure.
On Monday, the Library did close early on account of “safety concerns.” Last Thursday, there was a Facebook post warning that it was “time to shut down the library by force, and charge the people writing the checks as accessories for child abuse.” The poster, a state Republican party district chairman, told WOOD-TV that he was only intending to have the library closed through the force of law, and the television station said that the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department has received no active or imminent threats as a result of this post.
Library officials have remained silent since the Monday closure.
I am thankful that I don’t live in a town with NARROW MiNDED people! Being gay is not contagious, and by having books in the library, that might somehow be relatable to people in your community should not be against the law and be protected by the First Amendment not determined by a bunch of people who can’t see past the of their nose.
Incredible narrow mindedness. Have you ever seen all the TERRIBLE stuff written in the Bible?
