WEST OLIVE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 13, 2022) – Road crews have already had two winter storm situations along the Lakeshore … and the winter season doesn’t officially start on the calendar until next Wednesday, December 14th.
Some meteorologists were surprised last Friday afternoon when what was predicted to be just an inch of snow turned into three inches in parts of the Holland/Zeeland area, with whiteout conditions holding up Gobles High school buses taking the Tigers to a basketball doubleheader at Saugatuck High. Such situations don’t catch veteran weather watchers such as the Ottawa County Road Commission by surprise, according to department spokesman Alex Doty.
And when the snow does hit, so too do the snowplows.
Doty admits that the Road Commission here doesn’t name their snowplows as they do in Ohio, where that state’s Turnpike Commission’s annual contest came up with winners such as Ctrl-Salt-Delete, You’re Killin’ Me Squalls, Blizzard Wizard and The Big LePlowski.
