HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 7, 2022) – Another of the legal hurdles the City of Holland must clear before the dream of a permanent outdoor ice skating rink at Window on the Waterfront Park becomes a reality could be cleared on Wednesday evening.
During its biweekly business meeting, City Council members will be asked to approve an Indemnification Agreement already endorsed by the State of Michigan for the land off of East 6th Street and College Avenue targeted for the project. This is due to the fact that the land had been, for about 30 years, the site of a Contained Disposal Facility used by the US Army Corps of Engineers to store materials dredged from Lake Macatawa in order to maintain proper shipping depths. At the time the land was set aside for such dumping, the city approved a resolution allowing a park to be established there afterward, but any other future use needed to have the state be held harmless on any liability claims.
Holland Mayor Nathan Bocks is among many who can’t wait until after the Tulip Time Festival ends in May for construction to begin.
In addition to the ice skating rink, a BPW substation will be removed, and College Avenue will be extended north to accommodate parking and traffic into the renovated area.
Holland City Council meets in Chambers at Holland City Hall on Wednesday evening, beginning at 6 PM. An online link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
