LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 7, 2022) – A concerted effort to address a teacher shortage in Michigan is underway.
Leaders of 39 intermediate school districts spanning 63 counties statewide have formed an initiative that would create apprenticeships, paid student-teaching experiences, and zero-debt pathways, all aimed at bolstering enrollment in teacher preparation programs.
While “Talent Together” was unveiled on Tuesday through a virtual briefing, educators such as former Holland superintendent Dr. Brian Davis, now Associate Executive Director of Professional Learning with the Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators have been well aware of this situation.
“Talent Together” will be looking for funding through the state Education Department’s Grow Your Own grant program, recently funded by the Legislature to the tune of $175 million dollars, with a goal of seeing the first teacher candidates enrolled by next fall. The partnership is also asking state colleges and universities to offer proposals for addressing the matter, and is looking to gain its own certifying approval from the Michigan Department of Education.
