ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Dec. 4, 2022) – Those extra police patrols that were on roads across Michigan over the Thanksgiving Day holiday period won’t be going away anytime soon.
State police officials said on Thursday that troopers will be joined by county deputies and municipal law enforcement officers in continuing overtime speed enforcement efforts through the end of February. Funded by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, these shifts will aim to cut down on an 18.5% increase in speed-related fatalities in 2021 as compared to 2020, reflecting similar trends nationwide.
Allegan County Sheriff Frank Baker will have his deputies help in more ways than one on this initiative.
Overall, traffic crashes in Michigan were up 15 percent in 2021, and over 11 hundred persons lost their lives in such incidents.
