LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 10, 2022) – The tenor of a scheduled meeting on Thursday of legislative Republicans in Lansing has changed, thanks to Tuesday’s election results.
What members of the GOP caucus in the state House had planned to be votes on who would be the new Speaker, Floor Leader and other leadership positions in the Lower Chamber for after the first of the year is now a session on what to do as members of the minority party. Unofficial election results have given Democrats a slim edge in both the House and Senate, including flipping one of the House seats in Allegan County for the Lakeshore’s first Democratic state legislator in years.
Third-term Republican Representative Luke Meerman was reportedly interested in being the next GOP Floor Leader in the House.
However, with no meaningful state legislative action scheduled until after Thanksgiving, lawmakers’ plates may be quite full in the final three weeks of the current session.
