KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The passage of proposal one is giving some of the winners of the November 8 Election something to think about as they decide what to do about their political futures.
Reelected State Senator Seann McCann says it’ll shorten the term limit from 14 to 12 years, but allow lawmakers to spend all of those years in one chamber or the other, giving house members up to three more 2-year terms and Senators one extra 4 year term, or other options.
“As folks start trying to figure out whether they want to pursue the option of staying multiple terms in one chamber or the other. It changes the playing field dramatically,” said McCann who says this won’t affect him or other currently serving State Senators. He says however that the financial disclosure provisions could prompt some lawmakers to rethink life in politics and voters to reconsider how they feel about those officials.
Right now, Michigan is one of only two states that has no transparency at all when it comes to the private finances of its public officials.
