UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 8, 2022) – Voters along the Lakeshore will have many decisions to make when they head to the polls for a General Election on Tuesday.
Topping the ballot are contested races for the top statewide positions, including Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State and Attorney General. Positions on the Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, and the boards of the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Wayne State University will also be contested, as well as for the state Board of Education.
For the newly configured US House 4th District, 2nd District incumbent Bill Huizenga (R-Holland) is challenged by Holland Democrat Joseph Alonzo, Galesburg Libertarian Lorence Wenke, and Allegan’s Curtis Clark of the US Taxpayers Party.
There are candidates for three state Senate and nine state House seats that voters in Allegan or Ottawa County have to decide on, while four of 10 Ottawa County board and two of five Allegan County board spots are contested. There are also contested races for spots on the Douglas and Saugatuck city councils, the Holland Township Board, and on school boards in the Fennville, Hamilton, Holland, West Ottawa and Zeeland districts.
The three statewide ballot proposals – Proposal 1 on term limits, Proposal 2 on election reforms, and Proposal 3 on abortion – overshadow local questions that include a proposed sale of Laketown Township property by the Holland BPW; road improvement proposals/renewals for Blendon, Olive and Saugatuck townships; a library operating millage renewal in Jamestown Township that some see as a referendum on allowing certain books to be in that library; a public safety millage proposal in Park Township; a Headlee override proposal in Fennville; a bond proposal to build new restrooms at parks in Laketown Township; non-homestead millage renewals in Holland and Saugatuck schools; and recreation/playground and sinking fund proposals for Saugatuck schools.
Many voters have already cast absentee ballots, with others having until 8 PM tonight to deposit those ballots in their local clerk’s office. Absentee ballots can be acquired in person at local clerk’s offices today as well. In-person balloting at the polls takes place from 7 AM to 8 PM.
