HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Nov. 4, 2022) – Some quick work by an off-duty Holland Department of Public Safety firefighter prevented a tragic situation on Friday afternoon.
The unnamed firefighter was driving to an appointment around 1:25 PM on Waverly Road south of East 8th Street when she saw flames coming out of a barn. Stopping to investigate, she saw a lawn tractor ablaze and an 81-year-old man inside of the structure. She was able to get the man to safety and called 911.
It took less than four minutes for firefighters from the Waverly Road station to reach the scene, and they brought the blaze under control quickly, but not before the tractor was destroyed, along with some other items inside of the barn, but the structure was able to be saved. During the situation, the Graafschap and Hamilton fire departments responded to medical emergencies elsewhere in Holland.
Public Safety Fire Services Captain Chris Tinney didn’t say if the older man suffered any injuries as a result of the incident, and he didn’t report any firefighers, including the initial responding part-timer, being hurt. A cause of the fire wasn’t immediately determined.
