LAKETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 231 2022) – Workers began planting dune grass at Laketown Township Beach, 6710 142 nd Ave., on Friday, Oct. 28, 2022. A crew from Olde Paths, Inc., of Holland, covered the area by the upper east-west boardwalk. This is the first planting that will take place over three years in the area, according to Laketown Township Manager Al Meshkin.
“The purpose is to help stabilize the dune,” Meshkin said. “We’re focusing around the upper dune this year to protect the boardwalk. We will work down the dune and to the north over the next couple years.”
This first phase of the planting will cost $35,000, Meshkin said.
“We’ve been wanting to do this for years but the recent land acquisition makes it possible to start the project,” he said. The township recently purchased several
parcels including the land where the planting is now taking place.
The grass is planted in March through May or September through December while the plants are dormant, according to the Olde Paths website www.mydunegrass.com. The first year, a clump of five or six shoots will form. The second year, a dense stand of grass will cover the area.
