GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 26, 2022) – A convenience for motorists in the Detroit area is coming to Grand Rapids.
Starting on Tuesday, the state Department of Transportation will start having Safety Service Patrol vehicles monitor the three expressways that cross the Calder City. Also known as Freeway Courtesy Patrol vehicles, two skilled and qualified drivers will be on watch on Mondays through Thursdays from 6 AM to 7 PM, and an extra hour later on Fridays.
The roads that will have such surveillance are I-196 from 44th Street to I-96, US-131 from 100th Street to 10 Mile Road, and I-96 from Fruit Ridge Avenue to Alden Nash Road (M-50).
“Clearing roadway incidents faster reduces congestion and lessens the potential for secondary crashes,” MDOT Transportation Operations Center Engineer Timothy Schneider said in a department statement. “This is a welcomed benefit for every motorist and first responder on our roadways, and we are pleased to provide this service in the west Michigan area.”
MDOT has operated such a service in the Detroit area since 1999, and has expanded coverage to the nine-county “University Region” that includes the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Eastern Michigan University in Ypslianti, and Michigan State University in East Lansing.
