GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 26, 2022) – A 35-year-old Jenison man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on child pornography charges.
Michael John Batt is accused of using and attempting to use a youth around three years old to commit sexual acts in order to record those actions over a smartphone. The incident last month was posted online the next day, but state police troopers were able to track down the suspect through the Project Safe Childhood multi-jurisdictional initiative.
The Wednesday announcement of the charges against Batt by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan didn’t disclose a timetable on court proceedings. He is currently in the Ottawa County Jail facing state charges on the matter, and he has lost his position with Wayland Union Schools as a result, though district officials told WOOD-TV that the incident didn’t occur on school property, and that it has no information that Batt’s actions involved district staff or students.
