ALLENDALE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 23, 2022) – For the third time in this fall semester, there has been a reported shooting at an off-campus apartment complex near Grand Valley State University.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Nicholas Knott, a patrol unit in the area of the Alpine Student Living facility off of Pierce Street west of 48th Avenue heard multiple gunshots around 12:35 AM on Sunday. As numerous support vehicles streamed to the area, a number of persons and vehicles began fleeing, so that when deputies did arrive at the scene, there were no suspects or victims to be seen.
“A short time later, the Sheriff’s office was advised that a victim from the shooting had been brought to a local hospital,” Knott said in a department statement. “The victim’s injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.”
While assuring that “there is not believed to be any further threat to the public,” Knott added that anyone with any information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department or Ottawa County Silent Observer (877-887-4536).
Over less than a month’s span, from late August to mid-September, there were two reported shooting incidents at the nearby Canvas Townhomes complex, with four persons wounded and one person in custody, both from the second incident on September 18th. That suspect is not a GVSU student, and school Pubic Safety Captain Jeffrey Stoll told the GVSU student newspaper Lanthorn that that gun violence incidents, “are generally not caused by GVSU students.”
