KALAMAZOO, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 14, 2022) – The West Michigan economy appears to have flattened, but has not yet contracted into a recession.
That’s the opinion of Dr. Brian Long, director of Supply Management Research at Grand Valley State University, based on his monthly survey of purchasing managers in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo.
Long is about 80 percent certain that the region is sliding into a shallow recession, based not only on the national trends and feedback he hears from inside the region’s industrial employers, but also from the noise he hears from outside.
Long’s survey, released earlier this week, showed the sales/new orders index was flat in September after going into negative territory in July and August.
