LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 13, 2022) – State lawmakers are on the campaign trail right now, but once the November 8th General Election has taken place, the legislature is slated to return to Lansing to wrap up its current session.
One piece of legislation that will be before the House Committee on Rules and Competitiveness is House Bill 6326, which would help advance multiple school safety improvements such as an internship grant program to combat the shortage of mental health workers in schools, establish an online platform for accessing best practices on school safety and student mental health services, provide a couple of thousand dollars per school building to improve preparedness for an active threat, and funds for intermediate districts to hire both a school and security coordinator, as well as a student mental health coordinator.
The bill, sponsored by second-term Republican Representative Luke Meerman of Coopersville, must go through the legislature and be signed by the Governor before the end of the year, when unapproved and/or unsigned legislation is flushed out and must be reintroduced in a new legislative session.
