Mary was a sweet and kind woman. Her faith was very important to her, and she was a great example of it. She graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull, IA. After high school, Mary worked as a bookkeeper at the Co-op, where she met the love of her life, Dennis. She also worked for many years at Holland Hospital in the purchasing and cashier’s office. In retirement, Mary worked at the Conference Grounds. She was a master seamstress, and volunteered often at The Good Samaritan Center, teaching others how to sew. According to her family, her claim to fame was that she moved 27 times by the time she was 19 years old.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Delmar & Johanna (Hoekman) Roelofs; and her siblings: Dolores Westra, Roger Roelofs, and David Roelofs.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Dennis Auwema; her children: Denise & Jeffry Stam, Doug & Bobbie Auwema, David & Constance Auwema, Meri Carpenter, Tim Auwema & Melinda Stewart; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Kathy & Bruce Hulst; sisters-in-law: Eleanor & Rod Van Roekel, Jenean Mosterd, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service honoring Mary will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at Faith Christian Reformed Church, 85 W. 26th Street, Holland. A time of visitation will be held Wednesday, October 12, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Langeland-Sterenberg Funeral Home, 315 E. 16th Street, Holland. Burial will take place in Pilgrim Home Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Christian Reformed Conference Grounds (crcg.org) or Mobility Worldwide (mobilityworldwide.org).
