LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 10, 2022) – A Holland man who would like to break the Republican stronghold on the Lakeshore’s state legislative delegation has downplayed a report about his past.
Lansing-based MIRS News reported on Friday that Larry Jackson, running as the Democratic nominee for the November 8th general election in the newly created 86th state House district, had been arrested on separate drunken driving and weapons charges while serving in the military in Virginia Beach in 2005 and 2008, respectively, as well as two fake ID charges in Cook County, Illinois 10 years ago. The news service reported that he pled guilty to the charges in Virginia, while reaching a plea agreement to the counts in Chicagoland, where he lived before moving to Michigan in 2018.
In addition, MIRS is also reporting that Jackson admitted making social media posts dating back to 2012 and 2013 that had some lewd content and memes, but the candidate responded that “it was a long time ago” and that those posts shouldn’t discount him today. The news service quoted current state House minority leader Donna Lasinski of Scio Township as saying, “This is the first we are learning of this, and it is disturbing and disappointing. The Michigan House Democratic Fund has not invested in this race.”
Jackson is running against Republican Nancy DeBoer, the former Holland mayor, to represent the Tulip City in the Lower Chamber. Redistricting took the area away from two-term Representative Brad Slagh of Zeeland Township, and fellow Republican Jim Lilly of Park Township is term limited out of office at year’s end.
