ALLENDALE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Oct. 4, 2022) – A 19-year-old Grand Rapids man is in the Ottawa County Jail on charges stemming from increased police surveillance of the off-campus area near Grand Valley State University in Allendale.
According to Sheriff’s Detective Captain Jake Sparks, deputies pulled over a vehicle in the area of 48th Avenue and Campus Drive around 12:40 AM on Sunday for a traffic violation. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered two pistols, one of which was stolen and the other’s origin still under investigation. An initial investigation disclosed no evidence that either weapon had been fired prior to the stop.
Two teens from Grand Rapids were arrested at the time, with an unnamed 17-year-old boy taken to the county Juvenile Detention Center. The other, Eric Gordon Jr., was arraigned on Monday via video before Hudsonville District Court Judge Judith Mulder on a concealed weapon charge and for a bond violation. He was ordered held on $25,000 bond.
Sparks said that this incident is not related to the two shootings reported at the Canvas Townhomes complex in a nearly four-week span that led to four persons being wounded and one person facing charges. The extra patrols are as a result of these two incidents.
The investigation into this matter continues, and anyone with any information is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department or Ottawa County Silent Observer (877-887-4536).
