ALLENDALE TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Sept. 20, 2022) – For the second time in less than a month, there was a report of gunshots heard at an apartment complex near the Grand Valley State University campus in Allendale.
The first incident occurred on August 27th at the Canvas Townhomes complex off of 48th Avenue, when responding Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies heard gunfire as they arrived, but couldn’t determine where the noise was coming from, and there were no reports of any injuries, with one building damaged by “projectiles.”
However, in the second incident, which occurred around 2:20 AM on September 18th at the same complex, there were gunshot wounds suffered by four persons who apparently had been attending what Sheriff’s Detective Captain Jake Sparks called a “loud party.” Just as in the first incident, deputies heard gunfire as they initially arrived, and a follow-up police unit pulled over a vehicle believed to be involved, questioning several persons inside and seizing evidence.
One person was wounded at the scene, while three others were taken privately to “area hospitals.” Three of the four wounded were treated and released; a fourth remained in “stable condition” with non-life threatening injuries. Several vehicles were also struck by gunfire.
Sparks said that at least two of the victims were GVSU students, and department detectives are working with school officials on the matter. While no arrests were immediately made, the case will be turned over the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office, after the investigation is complete, for a final determination of what charges will be handed down.
The captain said that “there is no on-going threat to the public, students or staff at this time,” but he didn’t immediately say if this incident has any relation to the August 27th matter.
On Tuesday (Sept. 20), Canvas Townhomes released the following statement:
Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department or Ottawa County Silent Observer (877-887-4536).
