HOLLAND TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 29, 2022) – The identity of a 39-year-old Holland man who lost his life after being struck while attempting to cross US-31 on Holland’s North Side on Saturday evening has been disclosed.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jon Smoes, deputies and other first responders were dispatched to US-31 near Greenly Street shortly before 9:30 PM. That was where the pedestrian, trying to cross the southbound lanes on foot, was struck by a southbound van in the center lane. There is no traffic control signal at that intersection.
The man passed away at the scene, while the driver and his female passenger, aged 71 and 70 and both from Holland, suffered bumps and bruises and refused medical treatment at the scene.
On Monday morning, Sheriff’s Sergeant Mike VanDenBosch disclosed that the pedestrian was Ashley Benadum.
The incident remains under investigation.
