PARK TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 28, 2022) – A 43-year-old Zeeland man was hospitalized after the boat which he was piloting struck the south pier where Lake Michigan and the Macatawa River meet west of Holland on Saturday night.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jon Smoes, deputies and other first-responders were dispatched to the area around 10:15 PM. That was where the pilot of the 25-foot Monterey vessel, in attempting to approach the pier, turned the boat into the end of the pier.
Although the craft remained afloat, and the pilot and his four passengers were not thrown overboard, the captain sustained what Smoes would describe as serious but non-life threatening injuries and was taken to an undisclosed local hospital for treatment. The other four suffered no worse than minor bumps and bruises and refused medical treatment at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
