HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 23, 2022) – A new school year dawns this week, and while things are pretty much back to normal in classrooms after COVID-related disruptions and adjustments in Academic 2020 through 2022, one problem continues to confound educators locally, across the state and around the country.
The “help wanted” signs continue to be posted for school bus drivers, as the combination of wages, hours and student discipline has helped to decrease the number of those behind the wheel to the point where the school day itself has already been adjusted or is being considered. Holland Public Schools isn’t in that situation yet, but the need for bus drivers is acute, according to Superintendent Nick Cassidy, whose district begins classes on Wednesday.
A pall has already been cast locally after Hudsonville school bus driver Randy Tibbe passed away from an apparent medical emergency yesterday on the first day of classes for the Eagles, although district officials say that he was not behind the wheel at the time, and that no students were around when he succumbed.
