LAKETOWN TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Aug. 19, 2022) –Visitors to Laketown Township Beach will soon get a safety reminder about the dangers of Lake Michigan. The Laketown Township Parks and Recreation Commission has unanimously approved the purchase of two rip current warning signs for the public beach at the end of 142 nd Avenue.
The signs will explain the dangers of rip currents and what to do in case a swimmer gets caught in one. Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore, according to the National Weather Service. Rip currents can occur at any beach with breaking waves. They can pull a swimmer away from shore and submerge them. So far this year, Lake Michigan has had 33 drownings, according to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project website.
