HOLLAND, MI (WHTC AM/FM) – Windmill Island Gardens (WIG) and Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) are ready to show off their newly refurbished Smart Pollinator Garden and Windmill Island’s own community garden this Saturday.
The grand re-opening is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
The partnership between MSUE and WIG culminated this summer with the newly re-designed Smart Pollinator Garden, which includes educational signage about the importance of conserving our native pollinators.
Windmill Island Garden’s community garden has also been upgraded and re-sited with amenities such as a fence to protect against deer browse. Local gardeners rent plots to access the rich, fertile soil, which yields many fresh, homegrown vegetables.
The grand reopening Saturday will be able to sample healthy, grilled vegetables in the community garden space where MSU Extension Smart Gardening volunteers will be helping people learn how to grow and enjoy vegetable gardens at home.
Officials say Windmill Island Gardens offers a small slice of the Netherlands in West Michigan. The park features tours of ‘de Zwaan’, which is America’s only authentic, working Dutch windmill.
Other highlights include an Amsterdam street organ and children’s carousel among many Dutch replica buildings and exhibits. During Tulip Time in May, visitors can see 100,000+ tulips in beds and fields. Visitors can enjoy it all from mid-April to early October each year.
