Brittney Harvey Named as Hope College’s Sixth Softball Coach
Brittney Harvey is excited to take her swing at building on the winning tradition of Hope College softball.
The native of Waverly, Iowa, and a member of Trine University’s 2022 NCAA Division III national runner-up coaching staff has been named as Hope’s sixth head softball coach, Director of Athletics Tim Schoonveld announced.
Harvey follows Mary VandeHoef (2011-22), Karla Wolters (1988-2010), Anne Irwin (1977-87), Barb Bassett (1976), and Chris Blauwkamp (1975).
“Brittney is going to be an amazing addition to our coaching staff, softball program and Hope College,” Schoonveld said. “Her experience at one of the top programs in the country is going to enhance and build on the amazing things our softball program is providing. She is a winner, comes extremely highly regarded as a coach and has consistently impacted the lives of those she has coached. We want to welcome Brittney and her husband, Logan, to Hope and are excited to partner with them to transform lives.”

Nick Hoffman Chosen As Recipient Of MIAA’s Albert L. Deal Scholar Athlete Of The Year Award
Nick Hoffman’s rewarding journey at Hope College has culminated with the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s highest individual honor for a male student-athlete. The standout in both cross country and track and field is the 2022 recipient of the MIAA’s Albert L. Deal Scholar Athlete of the Year Award – Men’s Sport.
Since 2004, the Albert L. Deal Scholar Athlete of the Year award has recognized a senior male student-athlete from a MIAA member college who has excelled in academics and athletics while displaying outstanding leadership qualities. The award is named in honor of Albert L. Deal, who served as MIAA commissioner from 1971 to 1991.
Hoffman (Holland, Michigan / Holland HS) is Hope’s fifth Albert L. Deal Male Scholar-Athlete Award recipient. The runner and public accounting major joins golf’s Josh Gibson ’19, basketball’s Harrison Blackledge ’17, track and field’s Boone Marois ’16, and baseball’s Cory Schmidt ’13.

Kenedy Schoonveld Selected as MIAA’s Sheila Wallace Kovalchik Scholar Athlete of the Year Award
Kenedy Schoonveld’s enriching and accomplishment-filled time at Hope College is concluding with the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s highest individual distinction for a female student-athlete.
For the second consecutive year, the women’s basketball standout is the MIAA’s Sheila Wallace Kovalchik Scholar Athlete of the Year – Women’s Sport.
Since 2003, the Sheila Wallace Kovalchik Scholar Athlete of the Year award has recognized graduating female seniors who have excelled in academics and athletics, as well as displayed outstanding leadership in their respective communities. The award honors former MIAA Commissioner Sheila Wallace Kovalchik, who served the conference from 1991 to 2002.
Hope’s previous Wallace Kovalchik Award recipients were Schoonveld in 2021, track and field’s Erin Herrmann (2017), volleyball’s Jenna Grasmeyer (2015), and track and field’s Nora Kuiper (2009).

Four Women’s Golfers Named to WGCA All-American Scholar Team
Four Hope College women’s golfers have earned spots on the Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team.
Juniors Rita Cheney and Grace VanDellen join sophomores Abby Fansler and Emlin Munch in representing the MIAA champion Flying Dutch among the group of 1,485 recipients across all of women’s collegiate golf. The minimum cumulative GPA for honorees is 3.50.
Cheney and VanDellen each received the honor for the third time.
