GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC AM/FM) – A Holland man whose five year old daughter died after he crashed his vehicle in a construction zone on I-196 last year has been sentenced to three months in jail for reckless driving.
46-year-old Alejandro Soto told police he was distracted while trying to pick up a tablet for his daughter when he swerved and crashed into two other vehicles in Zeeland Township October 1, 2021. His daughter Isabella was unbuckled at the time.
The police report said traffic had come to a stop on that stretch of I-196. With his cruise control set to 80 miles per hour, Soto was driving in a lane that was ending due to construction. He then swerved and slammed into the two other vehicles.
The girl was critically injured and taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to the Grand Haven Tribune, while the prosecution was asking for prison time, Ottawa County Circuit Judge Jon Hulsing said the details of what happened would make that an “unduly harsh” decision.
In addition to the three months in jail, Soto was sentenced to three years probation and order to pay restitution to one of the other vehicle owners involved in the crash.
