DETROIT (WHTC-AM/FM, May 29, 2022) – A Holland firm is helping harbors along Michigan’s west coast to remain open while replenishing erosion-stricken Lake Michigan beaches this spring.
The US Army Corps of Engineers contracted with King Co. to dredge over 85,000 cubic yards – about 7,100 one-ton dump truck full – from the harbors of Holland, Grand Haven, South Haven and St. Joseph. The firm began its work in Holland earlier this month, spent time in Grand Haven last week, and plan to handle St. Joseph and South Haven, in that order, next month.
Before going through with the project, Corps engineers tested the dredged material to determine its suitability for reuse. Those tests came back positive for such action.
“Nourishing beaches using shoaled sand into these harbors rather than trucking in new material is very functional and cost effective,” said Grand Haven Resident Engineer Elizabeth Newell Wilkinson in a Corps statement. “It allows for both dredging and beach nourishment.”
