GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 6, 2022) – It’s now official: Mark Totten is the US Attorney for the Western District of Michigan.
The Kalamazoo native and former Chief Legal Counsel for Governor Whitmer was sworn in on Thursday at the federal courthouse in Grand Rapids by Chief US District Court Judge Robert Jonker. Totten had been nominated by President Biden to replace Andrew Birge last November, but his and other Justice Department confirmations in the Senate were held up by Arkansas Republican Tom Cotton over an unrelated matter before his objections were withdrawn last month.
Totten, a one-time Michigan State University law professor, was a part-time assistant in the office he now oversees for a two-year period. He will now handle federal law enforcement efforts over 49 counties, including Allegan and Ottawa.
The swearing in ceremony was done in private; a formal investiture will be held at an undisclosed future date.
