UNDATED (WHTC-AM/FM, May 5, 2022) – A sports entertainment tradition that spans decades continues in West Michigan this weekend.
At Paw Paw Middle School on Friday for the Van Buren County Fraternal Order of Police, and on Saturday evening at Allendale High for the Ottawa County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, a group of former football stars billed as the Detroit Lions Legends will provide an evening’s worth of fun, autographs, photos … and a little basketball for fundraising efforts by those two organizations.
Television pundit Rob Rubick, the Grand Valley State product who was a tight end for the Lions in the 1980’s, has been organizing these off-season events for over 30 years, with retired performers taking over for current players several years ago due to injury concerns by the team and the NFL.
“Once you’ve been to one of our events, you realize that it’s nearly impossible for us to get hurt,” Rubick admitted on WKZO’s “Kalamazoo Mornings with Ken Lanphear” earlier this week. “We’re just walking and waddling around the court. We’re going to get in 30 different kids during the game to play with us. We are the (Harlem) Globetrotters with no talent!
“The joy that we have, the ability to raise funds for a worthwhile cause – it’s very rewarding.”
Other Lions greats expected to attend include Herman Moore, Corey Schlesinger and George Jamison. Both events begin at 7 PM, and ticket information is here.
