Gertrude “Gertie” Mokma, age 91, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 15, 2022, at Medilodge Nursing Home. Gertie was born September 1, 1930 in Rock Valley, Iowa, to the late Marinus and Minnie Maassen Rozeboom. Raised in a Christian home, she and her four siblings helped on the farm and learned the value of hard work. The family later moved to Holland, Michigan where Gertie graduated from Holland High School and worked at the Snack Shack and the Holland Shoe Factory. She was proud to buy her own car with which she drove her girlfriends around town.

In 1953 she married Raymond Mokma, and the couple was blessed with a daughter, Linda. Gertie was a wonderful homemaker and stay-at-home mom. She and Ray loved to sing together and also played the organ and piano in their home often, transferring the love of music to their daughter as well. In later life, Gertie enjoyed planning trips and social events with other couples, most often to Christian music concerts around the area or going out to eat with family and friends.

Gertie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and John Buteyn, two grandchildren, David and Jill; her sisters and their husbands Henne and Rudy Kleinheksel, Reka and Ivan De Jonge, and brother and sister-in-law Jim and Mary Rozeboom plus many nieces and nephews whom she loved and kept all their birthdates on her kitchen calendar.

Gertie was preceded in death by her husband Ray; sister and brother-in-law Dorothy and Russ Borgman; and in-laws Jerry, Effie and Catherine Mokma, Dean and Josie Mokma, Larry and Marie Mokma, Harold and Mina Mokma, Jean and Gordon DeRidder, and Ethel Mokma.

Cremation has taken place. The family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers at Medilodge of Holland as well as Hospice of Holland for your tender care of Gert: your love to our mom and the whole family is very much appreciated. Gert’s testimony and favorite Bible verse: My Beloved is mine, and I am His. Song of Solomon 2:16.

A celebration of life will be Saturday, May 14, 2022, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Lakeshore Memorial Services. We hope you are able to join us and share your favorite memories.
