LAKETOWN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, May 3, 2022) – A bit of Laketown Township in downtown Saugatuck is getting a facelift for the
summer.
The Mize Memorial Garden at Butler and Mason streets opened in 1998 and was a gift to the city from Roxie Ann Mize of Laketown Township. Saugatuck City is improving the park this spring, removing overgrown material, preserving and replanting healthy plants, resetting and cleaning brick pavers, installing new irrigation throughout plant beds and putting in new roses, shrubs, perennials, soil, mulch and ground covers.
“The garden is older than 20 years and is in desperate need of significant landscape improvements. Many mature plants in the garden had become overgrown, smothering each other to get access to water, light and nutrients,” the city wrote in an email to residents. “This has led to numerous complaints from citizens regarding the conditions of the garden. The purpose of this project is to ensure that the garden remains a beautiful space for all to enjoy.”
Work on the garden should be complete by Memorial Day. The Mize property, 55 acres at the northwest corner of 138 th Avenue and 64 th Street in Laketown Township, was sold after Roxie’s death in 1996. Her estate gave the city $445,486 to create and maintain the garden in honor of her, her brother, Sam, and his wife, Doris.
