LAKETOWN TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 28, 2022) – Independent research scientist Hannah-Maria Jacques, Ph.D., will be conducting a biodiversity study at Sanctuary Woods Park starting in May. On April 20, the Laketown Township Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously approved Jacques’ proposal to establish baseline documentation of the plants and aquatic insects at the 40-acre site. The survey work will begin May 7 with two days in June, two days in July and two days in August.
An annual report detailing the progress of the project will be issued to the township in the spring of each year. Plant specimens will be offered to the University of Michigan Herbarium, becoming part of a collection that dates back to the 1830s. Aquatic insects collected in Sanctuary Woods Park will be offered to the Insect Division of the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology. The researchers will also document the amphibians and reptiles they observe. They will collect any cast skins of snakes or dead amphibians or reptiles found. Information generated by the biodiversity survey could help with future grants and give parks managers information for more informed decisions impacting the park.
