OLIVE TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 21, 2022) – A “possible fraudulent mailing” scheme that may be widespread in nature has Ottawa County Sheriff’s detectives looking into a tax scam.
According to Captain Jake Sparks, the letter to several businesses and individual purport to come from the “Tax Resolution Unit” of Ottawa County. This “Distraint Warrant” talks of wage garnishment, property seizures and a creation of a property lien if a listed balance isn’t paid in full.
“It is believed that this same scam has been used in other parts of the country as well,” Sparks said in a department statement. “The Ottawa County Treasurer’s Office has confirmed that they do not have a ‘Tax Resolution Unit’ and do not send out ‘Distraint Warrants.’”
Anyone who receives such a letter should immediately toss it out, ignoring any requests for money that the letter may say is due. Calls to the Sheriff’s Office are encouraged for those who may have any questions on the matter.
The investigation, which began on Tuesday, is ongoing, and anyone with any information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Department or Silent Observer (877-887-45368).
