MATTAWAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 20, 2022) – More than 30 million children rely on free or reduced-price meals at school. What do those kids – and their families – do when school’s out for summer – and food insecurity skyrockets?
West Michigan’s Mattawan Consolidated School recently won the USDA’s Turnip the Beet Award for the fourth consecutive year for its summer meal program. Mattawan provides students with high-quality meals that are appetizing, appealing, and nutritious. Meals were evaluated based on the use of seasonal and locally produced foods, a variety of colors, a variety of fruits and vegetables, and more.
Over the past four years, Mattawan has been awarded one Gold medal, two Silver medals and one Bronze medal and the school anticipates its fifth award this year! Plans are in place this summer to continue with its “Meet Up and Eat Up” Summer Food Service Program. The school has also teamed up with a local business to provide activities, events, and free books for children throughout the summer program.
