ZEELAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 17, 2022) – A two-year-long, $66 million project to rebuild the main route between Zeeland and Hudsonville gets underway on Monday.
Crews will begin putting barricades along I-196 in both directions, diverting westbound traffic from 32nd Avenue to Byron Road to the eastbound lanes while the westbound lanes are rebuilt. Culvert replacement, bridge work, and sewer and drainage improvements are included in the project.
In addition, ramps from Business 196 to westbound I-196 will be closed, while a single ramp to eastbound I-196 will remain open while a bridge on Byron Road just east of the freeway is replaced. Once that work is complete, Michigan Department of Transportation officials will decide whether to keep that ramp open, or to divert eastbound traffic along the two-lane Byron Road to 32nd Avenue in order to enter the highway.
The westbound lanes work is slated to run through October 19th, although weather, material and possible organized labor delays are anticipated to extend the effort to perhaps the Thanksgiving holiday. The second half of the project, which will focus on the eastbound lanes, is slated for a similar April-November time frame next year.
Earlier work on rebuilding I-196 focused on a stretch from Kenowa to 32nd Avenue in eastern Ottawa County, and from Adams Street east of Holland to the Blue Star Highway in Douglas. Currently, the ramp from northbound I-196 to northbound US-31 is closed through October for similar road reconstruction on US-31 from Washington Avenue to the freeway.
