HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 12, 2022) – Now that tax abatements are in place, it’s time to look at plans for expanding one of Holland’s two lithium-ion battery plants.
Officials of LG Energy Solution will be on hand this evening for the City of Holland’s Planning Commission meeting. They are expected to go over how they want to use 1.3 million square feet of additional building space, some of which will require expanding existing structures to over 60 feet high, in order to expand the facility, due to increased customer demand for batteries that power electric vehicles and other devices. Up to 15 new buildings on the site off of East 48th Street on Holland’s southeast corner could be built.
LG was able to secure tax abatements from the city and from the state to help facilitate the $1.7 billion price tag for the project that the company believes will create 1,200 new jobs. Some local residents had objected to the expansion, claiming that their property has been rendered not sellable since the facility was initially built in 2010. According to documents ahead of tonight’s meeting, city planners say that LG made significant changes to the site plan on the east side of the project, the closest to those residents, rotating a warehouse building to a north-south direction that would provide more buffer difference between the structure and the property line, among other things.
The Holland Planning Commission meeting begins in Holland City Hall’s Council Chambers at 5 PM.
