ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 6, 2022) – On this National Distracted Driving Awareness Month of April, the state police is partnering with a number of county and local law enforcement entities in an effort to cut down on the number of crashes and fatalities stemming from motorists not paying attention to their driving.
The “Connect to Disconnect” that begins on Thursday is part of the national “U Drive, U Text, U Pay” media campaign, and over the five-day span, troopers, deputies and officers will be on the lookout. Allegan County Sheriff Frank Baker’s department is participating in this safety initiative. “You got so many opportunities to be distracted in a car now,” he said on “WHTC Talk of the Town” in a recent appearance, “and it is dangerous. That’s one of the reasons why we crack down on the texting and driving, and why we look at different public service announcements to remind people that they have to take this seriously.”
Ironically, a Monday crash on M-40 south of Allegan that took the life of a 20-year-old Grand Rapids man was initially investigated as a case of distracted driving.
