LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Apr. 5, 2022) – When spring break ends, a major road reconstruction begins.
The Michigan Department of Transportation announced on Monday that work on rebuilding both directions of I-196, between the Byron Road exit east of Zeeland to the 32nd Avenue exit in Hudsonville, gets underway next Monday, April 11th. The two-year, $66 million project will include a complete redo of both lanes in each direction, along with culvert replacement, sewer and drainage improvements, and bridge work.
For 2022, westbound traffic will shift over to the eastbound lanes in this span while the westbound lanes are rebuilt, and those new lanes will handle traffic in both directions next year when the eastbound lanes are renovated. This is the latest stage in a multi-year, total improvement of I-196 from Grandville to Saugatuck/Douglas. The work this year is slated to tentatively go through October 19th.
In a separate project, US-31 is getting a similar rebuild from Holland to I-196 through a tentative finishing date of October 1st.
