LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 23, 2022) – Help for Michigan’s farm community may be coming from the Legislature.
Senator Roger Victory’s office announced on Wednesday the introduction of Senate Bill 885, a $1.4 billion budget supplemental that “would direct the money to improve Michigan’s food security and invest in rural communities.” If signed into law, the cash would be directed toward a wide range of needs for farmers and consumers.
Victory, a first-term Republican from Hudsonville, is a commercial produce farmer as well. “In two weeks, we can come up with a billion dollars for the auto industry,” he said on “WHTC’s Talk of the Town” on Monday, referencing a $1.5 billion package approved in December that supporters say would help the state land major projects in “critical industries.” “What part of our community, what part of the state have we been neglecting? There’s need and sustainable growth in our rural communities, our agricultural processing facilities, our food distribution systems – and it’s across the board.”
The bill was forwarded to the Senate Appropriations Committee for consideration.
