SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 20, 2022) – Looking for something different to do this summer?
The Michigan Maritime Museum has a suggestion – be a sailor!
The South Haven-based entity announced last week that it is accepting applications for volunteers to be a part of the crew aboard the tall ship Friends Good Will. Built for and by the museum in 2004, the vessel is a replica of an 1810 merchant ship that toured the Great Lakes in the early years of such shipping.
Volunteers will need to be at least 16 years old to participate in a Basic Seamanship Training program, with sessions scheduled for April 23-24 and May 21-22. The program has classroom and on-water instruction specific for the tall ship, including seamanship skills, sail handling, setting sails and more. Once qualified, volunteer crew members can sign up for as many as four sails daily, seven days a week. Although the program is free, those wishing to join the Friends Good Will crew must be members of the Michigan Maritime Museum.
