SAUGATUCK, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 13, 2022) – The expansion of outdoor dining areas in the City of Saugatuck will be before the Council on Monday night.
Under an ordinance amendment, the proposal would allow for the licensing of such spaces on downtown streets. Last summer, city staffers had attempted to survey those businesses who had pop-up patio permits to get their perspective and opinions, but the “response rate … was small,” according to Deputy City Clerk and Project Coordinator Kate White in documents attached to the agenda for this meeting. Survey findings were presented in the fall, and two special meetings in December with council members came up with a consensus of maintaining such permits for another year, but with some alterations to address concerns from various stakeholders.
If the amendment is approved, annual licenses would be issued to just food and beverage retailers from April 1st through November 30th, with a monthly $200 per parking space fee, barriers no longer than 40 feet, no ground coverings, no advertising banners or related decorations, and these pop-up patios must adhere to established design requirements.
This and other issues will be before the Saugatuck City Council during the 7 PM meeting in the second floor meeting room at Saugatuck City Hall, with a ZOOM live stream available.
