HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 9, 2022) – A step towards a new financial model for college students is being taken by Hope College.
The Holland school announced on Wednesday the establishment of an “Anchored Tuition Pledge,” which aims to hold tuition at the starting rate for each incoming class while keeping that cost at the present level for all current students. Slated to begin this fall, the initiative would stop any annual tuition increases, but won’t apply for room, board and fees, the costs of which “could vary with inflation,” according to school officials.
The pledge is part of Hope President Matthew Scogin’s “Hope Forward” drive to eventually fully fund a Hope education for all students through gifts rather than tuition. “Too many students are chasing income to pay off their debt, rather than really pursuing the kind of impact they really want to have on the world,” he said on “WHTC Morning News” during a December interview. “At Hope, we want to really live up to our name; we want to be graduating students who are agents of hope, who are going out into the world and not burdened by debt.”
The current annual full-time tuition at Hope is $36,300, with that figure slated to rise to $37,900 next fall, with fees for Academic 2023 totaling $11,470.
