ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, Feb. 7, 2022) – Zeeland Board of Public Works electric customers will be seeing new meters installed on their property over the next several months.
Crews from Allegiant Utility Services retained by the municipal utility will begin putting in advanced monitoring equipment this month, replacing about six thousand existing meters with devices that will provide the BPW with “more detailed load and energy consumption information,” according to the utility’s Electric Transmission and Distribution manager Tracey DeKraker in a department statement. “Our electric customers will receive a letter and phone call, notifying them as to when we will be in their neighborhood.
“Allegiant technicians have installed thousands of meters, therefore it’s a quick process,” DeKraker continued. “Though everything takes place outside, we do want customers to know they will lose power for a minute or two.”
The new meters compliment the MyMeter customer portal launched by the Zeeland BPW last fall, and there will be no additional cost for the installation, according to the utility. Crews will have appropriate identification on hand and be working from vehicles labeled with both the Allegiant and Zeeland BPW logo.
Installation of “smart meters” have met with some resistance over the past few years by other municipal and commercial utility customers over concerns of possible privacy invasion.
The Zeeland BPW added that plans for a pilot installation of advanced water meters are underway, although no project launch date has yet been announced.
