2022 Challenge gets people moving and doing good. Jon Ornee’s 20:22 for 2022 Challenge on New Year’s Day got people exercising while raising $13,768 for Community Action House. The funds will support CAH programs as the nonprofit expects its highest impact year yet.
The Momentum Center to hold 3-part mental health forum. The very pandemic that is causing a mental health crisis along the Lakeshore and across the country also threatened the Momentum Center’s ‘Winter Series: Exploring Mental Illness. Organizers decided to move the three-part forum online.
Creative Nomads: How letting go inspired our most creative year. Retired Herrick District Librarian Kelli Nina Perkins and husband Bill Parrott decided to hit the road during the pandemic. The Holland couple are now full-time nomads exploring the U.S. in their truck camper and sharing their stories on YouTube and Instagram as Outer Limits Open Road.
Popular pub to return in Holland’s first mixed-use building under new development code. A new 14,000-square-foot building will include the popular restaurant Goog’s Pub along with a boutique market/beverage center and apartments.
Women of Color Give distributes $40k to 5 groups. Women of Color Give awarded more than $40,000 to five local organizations that took part in the collective’s second annual Pitch Night in December.
Good things to do in January
Jan. 14-16: Meltdown Sale in downtown Holland: The Meltdown Sale is downtown Holland’s biggest sale of the (new) year. Merchants will be offering deep discounts on hundreds of items as they clear their shelves to make room for new merchandise after the holidays. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Jan. 17: Celebrating MLK Day at the Holland Museum: Holland Museum will celebrate the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a free day, enjoy crafts in the Smithsonian Spark!Lab in addition to winter-themed STEAM activities. There will be a scavenger hunt looking for interesting facts about inventors of color. Free. Details: www.hollandmuseum.org.
8 a.m. Jan. 22: Snowshoe & Cross-Country Ski Biathlon at Pigeon Creek Park: The Pigeon Creek Biathlon is for all skill levels are welcome to this fun, low-key snowshoe and cross-country ski biathlon. Proceeds support the work of the Parks Foundation in providing additional funding for the expansion and improvement of Ottawa county parks, and nature education. Registration ends 9 p.m. Jan. 19.
